SAN FRANCISCO, CA – May 5, 2025 – Canopy, a leader in healthcare safety technology, today announced a significant legal victory reinforcing the importance of innovation and fair competition. On April 25, 2025, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California granted Canopy a preliminary injunction against Commure, Inc. (Case No. 5:24-cv-02592-NW). The Court found that Commure will likely be found in violation of its restrictions from its former reseller contract with Canopy -- by building, selling and distributing its competing “Strongline Pro” product.
This ruling stems from a complex history where Canopy (originally SMP Labs) developed its cutting-edge wearable safety technology and the Real-Time Location System (RTLS) enabling it, and licensed it for distribution. Commure acquired this license but, as the Court's ruling suggests, likely violated the terms of its agreement, including a clause explicitly prohibiting creating a derivative product through reverse engineering. Evidence indicates Commure used Canopy’s confidential information, gained through the reseller relationship, to improperly build and market its copycat Strongline Pro platform.
At Canopy, our mission is built on developing new technology, products, and solutions to support those who care for us. We invest heavily in research and development to create original, pioneering solutions like Canopy Protect. The Court's findings underscore that Commure's misuse of Canopy's proprietary technology and information, gained through and in breach of its reseller agreement, not only undermines the innovation ecosystem but also risks compromising the trust healthcare providers place in essential safety solutions.
The preliminary injunction immediately prohibits Commure from activities including:
"Fundamentally, this ruling is about trust – the trust our customers place in us to protect their people," said Shan Sinha, CEO and Co-Founder of Canopy. "Our commitment to staff safety requires authentic, dependable technology, which we invested years creating. This injunction protects that original innovation. This gives our customers the assurance that they are equipped with the authentic, reliable Canopy technology vital for safeguarding their workforce."
This legal victory validates Canopy's technology leadership and protects the substantial investments made to develop its unique platform. It is important for our entire industry that innovation continues. This ruling reinforces trust with the hundreds of thousands of healthcare providers who depend on Canopy's proven technology and solutions.
